Wednesday Music list...
Thought I'd do something different here. Every Wednesday, I'll do a different top ten music list of something that's intriguing me on that particular day.
This week: Ten Best Zappa Solos from regular albums, not the Guitar CDs.
Inca Roads (from You Can't Do That On Stage Volume 2) - This is the concert where the studio version of Inca Roads got its solo, but on Stage 2, the solo is complete and undedited. Very nice flow, and this track also features a great keyboard solo by George Duke.
RDNZL (Lather) - This is a great loping solo, also featuring some great keyboard work from George.
Duke Of Orchestral Prunes (Lather) - Orchestral instrumental where Zappa's guitar contrasts well with the brass.
Rat Tomago (Sheik Yerbouti) - A solo taken out of context, probably from The Torture Never Stops, punctuated by Roy Estrada's agonized howling.
Wild Love (Sheik Yerbouti) - There's a great little 45 second or so sequence at the end of this song where Zappa suddenly sounds like he leapt into a Steely Dan song.
Filthy Habits (Stage 4) - This is a great rendition of this track from the 88 Tour, with Zappa playing some very tight lines.
The Torture Never Stops Part 2 (Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life) - More 88 Zappa, as he reels off a six-minute solo that never feels like six minutes.
Whipping Post (Does Humor Belong In Music?) - What started as a joke in 1974 became a standard show ender when Bobby Martin joined the band, and this is some nasty, nasty Zappa playing here.
Watermelon In Easter Hay (Joe's Garage) - No solo list is complete without Joe's final imaginary guitar solo.(There's also a great version of this on Guitar.)
Leather Goods (Lather) - Six minutes of Zappa doing an amazing impersonation(intentional or otherwise) of Jimmy Page, which got trimmed down to about a minute and a half as part of Duck Duck Goose on the same album.
Muffin Man (Bongo Fury) - Good night, Austin, Texas, wherever you are~!
- Next week, ten great Italian Horror Soundtracks to get(and yes, it's mostly Goblin.)
